Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
The Pine Ridge Reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota Sioux. Although Pine Ridge is the 8th largest reservation within the United States, it is the poorest. Unemployment ranges between 80% -85% and around 50% of residents live below the federal poverty level. Life expectancy on the reservation is lowest anywhere in the western hemisphere (besides Haiti).
Very sad statistics.

Jay Shafer takes you inside his tiny 100 square foot tiny home
Saw one of these months ago at an auction. I should have bought it.
This is a simple dynamic graphic I coded using Simplepie and Processing.js to visually track recent earthquakes using data from an XML feed published by usgs.gov. I think there a lot of possibilities for Processing taking over a lot of what flash is doing on the web. Hopefully some more Processing experiments soon.
I love these maps by Eric Fischer
Lehigh Acres - Florida’s Detroit. Sitting on the Gulf coast directly opposite overcrowded West Palm Beach on the Atlantic, Lehigh Acres boasts 90% vacant lots since the 1950s when it’s Chicago-based developer used the land as a tax shelter. The unincorporated city is now a declared blight, and a new 1,500 square foot 3/2/2 home can be purchased for under $50,000.
A massive sinkhole in Guatemala City (map), Guatemala is thought to have been triggered by tropical storm Agatha.

The Oregon State Capitol building in Salem, Oregon.
Oregon has had three capitol buildings. Construction of the newest building began on December 4, 1936 and was completed in 1938. It is the fourth-newest capitol building in the United States. Chosen from 123 entries in a countrywide competition, the design of the new building deviated from the normal design of state capitol buildings. The design was labeled a combination of Egyptian simplicity and Greek refinement. It is one of only three state capitols constructed in the Art Deco Style.
On March 20th, 2010, an eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano began in Fimmvörðuháls following months of small earthquakes under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The eruption halted air travel throughout Europe for several weeks afterward.
